my name is Miss Covina and assistant principal of health careers in science today we are showcasing dental lab technician program so we have two instructors present mr. Burris the instructor of Junior dental lab technician program she's presenting on today with his Junior students and also we have this present I'm going to give the mic to mr. thank you good morning everybody welcome welcome to the dental lab technology for today's presentation are we going to start by looking at too short videos these videos YouTube and they really tell a good story about our program as an overall bases I'm going to share my screen tell if you are unable to hear the video for some reason are we have been having a little bit of trouble with there are captions where you can read and this particular video I'll place the links online so that you can also find a link slate and then I'll go over some of the video if you have questions about a video you can write them down and then we'll answer them after the first one okay so I know the sound of that is not very good however from the beginning you see this building and its cause was it the moment this student is showing herself working at a desk where she is making a full denture upper and lower she is she was setting the teeth in place that's one of the tasks that we will do in the 11th grade and then she go on to mention the fact that there are many different areas to dental lab technology on this crown and Bridge work and there is implants work and so forth and you would specialize in one of these are within dental technology so there are many areas but you learn all the areas of the later time you specialize in one area of the other they'll also some of the things that you see her working on there she's working on Daikin custom trays and in one instance she was making a custom tray with acrylic and she was crying in that down in another instant she was being making a model and she was trimming the model on the bottle trimmer those are just some of different tasks that we do I want to try this other video I know you guys are not turn it exceptionally well and then I'll give you a brief overall presentation for the entire program let's see how this one plays I'm sorry I missed cover do you want to say something no no u okay so here you see this sound technician she is working on a full denture upper is a full denture in the lower to be a partial that she's working on almost about technicians in most legit go to you'll see them sitting at a desk bike there's they device where the Dentures mounted on the yellow apartments near that is a fanatical the Dentures will be mounted on the articulator on the model and then they will dare try to recreate the structure of the mouth the proper function of their mouth and I was wanting to look as natural as possible so there's a lot of detail work involved but most of it is Hands-On work at where you'll be sculpted I can duplicate license are then a lot of tetanus start to go out and open laboratories on their own and that's not very difficult to do however there are a lot of small labs all around and in some states within the United States can't you are actually license to work in the mouth also so depends on what state you working with the extent to which you will work directly with the patient so real quickly let me give you an overview and then I'll open up for my students to talk to you guys Istanbul you guys were asking the questions you may have so again this is Dental Laboratory technology one of the reasons that I use this power points because we are apart of the medical field we work with the work with the dentist work with hygienist work directly with the patient from time to time so some of the things you saw in the videos there were technician from fabricating Dentures here we start see this man and whether it be by accident or a play this doesn't really matter there are times that things happen to people and their oral cavity becomes not very pleasing to look at and so our job is technicians is to restore that as close to normal as possible so that patients smile will be restored their self-esteem will be restored and also we were storing the oral helping function this particular picture here is an example of a denture has been invested this is actually something that was done in the laboratory with our students and it shows all the teeth in place on the rugae to the front of the mouth to all job history what happens to the patients and sometimes that confidence that we were snoring and making their mouth beautiful again is at times more important to them than just so you know the oral function is everything this particular picture is showing completed denture upper and lower and it's a long process to get to this stage but the Stevens enjoy the different processes as they go along and they learn different different materials and the prince structures of the mouth and so forth as they go along and fabricating the same problem here we have implants and this is a technique is Nepal the industry that very popular right now people don't want to have dentures that into the fabrication of these prophecies that you don't necessarily see in the end product are we have a picture of the anatomy of the tooth intern an external nose Anatomy that's something that we focus on quite a lot you didn't need to know about the oral cavity and all the anatomy and soap with it's not just a Hands-On but I'm behind the materials and also Anatomy on as well classroom we have students work in various groups usually group of three or two here we have a picture of the others they're working are there built-in fabricating models are there yeah man, would you like to talk about this picture but in that picture we're making pasta motto and pasta is powder when it's mixed with water that hardens and it forms like a stone like investment or model so when you're mixing plaster living too much water because that is going to be iniquity and you don't want to ask you last quarter because I was going to say sorry so you're not going to be able to make it going to pour seem even silly it sometimes but something is coming into me to learn how to work with the Bunsen burner they need to learn how to call Imagine turn on and be able to light Bunsen burner they need to learn how to work with wax need to learn how to work with the various tools and equipment that we have so all of these are foundational skills that we change that labels for them as they go into the Because everything so yeah and with a safety precautions you always have to wear your lab coat because it's easy to get wax on your clothes and you know kind of hard to come out I mean not really but like soda and goggles depending on what you're doing like if we're making models you should wear goggles so nothing goes near okay thank you Miss Covina like to open it up for questions that's point yes go ahead all the temporary students who are a part of the show Casey asks you if you would like or if you could include I can kind of mr. Brice what do you think what skills would make you successful in the dental lab technician program because it's a two-year program and you if you're starting you know and your junior year and 2 + edema what skills would make you successful the first thing that still needs to be able to do anime seem very simple and it's to follow instruction and sometimes instructions from people and you know we want to jump over from Step a two-step C and the work that we do and requires that you followed those detail instructions in those produced The Best Buy product for that patient and to make sure that is not harmful to the patient so following instructions is going to be keeping the second thing is you have to be able to pay attention to detail take for instance just one to if it is more than 30 different arch in back almost a hundred different parts of it too when we are replica that we need to be able to duplicate each section so that when the teeth of crew together they will they will be able to function properly I made probably can cause severe pain to the patient or damage to the underlying tissues and so paying attention to those details is also crucial within the classroom it take some time to develop those skills in your Kansas bike sculpting know if anyone has ever skull but it will take some time if you ever try to draw if you're not an artist and you start to draw you made your stick figure but over time you'll develop to the point where you can juul someone person speech is very well so you have to also have patient in order to learn the skills that you need to be able to manipulate all the various materials to do what you need to do thank you so much I actually have a question for our June years it was a question for Miss father man to the Juniors and us to the junior student what made you choose Dental Mission program we can start with Brian then fall of Sean wants to chime in go ahead which I mean is well what made you choose deal T because for example with Brian eyes was giving him and his parents actually at or around dental technician program before he actually had made that decision because I believe Brian was deciding between dental assistant and dental abscess which leads me actually to the second question from his father might as well if I know I want to be a dentist should I do then selects ignition program or dental assistants so first let's starts with what Q dental lab technician program guide I chose dental lab technician because it was a more Hands-On major out of all the other majors and also like I'm not that I'm not a social person so low dental assistant is not for me at all so that's the reason why I chose text I chose Dental Lab I wanted like a hands-on experience and I want to try something new and I'm glad with my decision very good thank you DJ what's up what's up why did you choose your major hi and I I chose this major because I got caught my eye and I know that I wanted to be in the dental field so and I'm really interested in a way so thank you so much and Kareem you are very quiet person right and do you want to kind of sorry to push up the spot why did you choose. Play Sasha. ever since I got braces is really interesting and I don't really like talkin talkin to people that much so like dental assistant would be my like my choice because you know they're working today I work in the most efficient like all day so I wanted to do something behind the scenes and also I'm also very creative so I feel like I was the best medicine thank you. this is another question from from Victoria what are some challenges you faced being in this major so Korean can you add can you answer that question what are some challenges you faced in this major a lot of challenges every project that I had a lot of time cuz the Indus major is as like you ever because from what we just got into the major with the rice box has the hardest project out of all like in my opinion is the artist project wax melts and it's hard to control the wax when it's your first time but I'm over time when you keep working with the wax over and over you definitely get better at Richmond with it as Mister bun it's like doing the stick figure and then over time you evolve to join a person I feel like it's the same way but it would be a lot of charges but it's okay it's how you overcome the challenges the best part perseverance and patience I believe patience is one of the rarest Lesean do you want to share your challenges you faced being in this major animal challenge is also I like my biggest one was when we had to start making our dentures that was the hardest for me and that you would have a lot of patience for because I got mad so many times but I still push through and I was able to say very good thank you so I missed the birth of what would be your recommendation for the students are who wants to become a dentist and wants to go cannot decide where the dental lab is a good major or dental assistant because I was going to say if you how to be a dentist dental assistants is the pathway do you agree with that or disagree be hostile mute yourself dental assistant that provided great opportunity for them to work directly with the patient and with the dentist and see how things how they function within that environment however one of the things that you have to learn also is anatomy which we also focus a lot on in dental lab I do believe they go through a. Where they do have to learn about dentures in the making Dentures crown and Bridge work in fact some of our technicians not from the school but owners they go around to different parts of the country they teach the dentist about the how they have to be done you have to have an intricate knowledge of how we function in the laboratory setting and how we fabricate things so if they're going to go into down the street by the one I think we'll give him a big boned Clemson logo on it just depends on the experience they want to have the they want to have an experience where they were actually learning the skills that they may need to use as a dentist or are we supposed to give them that but they want to learn more the patient side how to deal with the patient assistance line thank you so much and we're going to just ended was that question what do you need to do to maintain your spot in Dental left ignition program to stay in the program till senior year basically I think you farted what makes you successful directions and really full feeling every project if there is seeing you today till the ants correct would you want to add anything else first of all I always tell my students as they come into the major and the get started I say be ready to fail you learn from your failures don't be afraid of failing so don't come the mentality of you know I can't been paying until the senior year in October came around we had to do that with Brian and you know because of the overwhelming but again I take my time I don't push you beyond your limits will I push you to your limit if you're willing to in your and focus on the assignment then you will succeed one of the things that prevent steel from succeeding in stating they're coming into the laboratory setting and I just going to make Dentures or the Hands-On portion but there's also a lot of scientific Fortune there a lot of portfolio Simonson stuff with that they do have to complete and if you're not doing your balance and everything that you're doing and not just the hands on the doing the homework make sure you passing the exams make sure you learn the anatomy making sure you learn materials Daniel probably not going to make it so you know they requires a bit more I think then some other classes because you doing the Practical and also the sign of it yes where are pistachio casings session and I wanted to see everything stars and Miss Rodriguez Jr. Thank you so much guy thank you so much Juniors thank you. thank you and I'm still answering the questions in the chat but I'm going to start recording right now
