good afternoon everybody misdemeanor and assistant principal of health careers and Sciences program showcasing I'm going to jail walk right into it I'm going to present dr. backhoe to you who is the instructor for both of Junior practical nurse students and Senior practical nurse to Olson house today practical nurse allow us to kind of have a deeper dive into what the Practical Nurse Program is all about and we are also responding to any questions that you have Lisa Pace them in the chat and I will do my best to answer them as soon as possible thank you and that tobacco you for coming what we're hoping that you're going to get from all of this is a little bit of an overview of what our program is that what we have to offer and just a little bit of an overview before I call on my students who are in the audience to talk to you our practical nursing program doors program our students go through two years of both didactic which is your class study and exploration of our students are doing over 650 hours of clinical and you'll hear more about that from our students the clinical work nutrition pharmacology basic fundamentals of nursing as well as human growth and development anatomy and physiology and different areas of nursing such as medical surgical nursing pediatric nurse Arbiter no Health mental health the end of course a big part of what licensed practical nurses do is work in long-term care settings so that involves a lot of geriatric care so our students are getting prepared for not only nursing in the with the young people but also with the old so understanding the lifespan people change they go from young to old is so very important so with that said if you do have any questions please put them into the chat so that we can answer them for and when I asked of I'm going to ask one of our students to talk a little bit about the program and and won't will address that I saw request clinicals during school days on actually yes it is a clinical is during school days the way that works during your junior year you will be doing 60 hours of clinical can your senior year you are actually in the building every other week in clinical the entire day from 7 a.m. till about to 2:30 depending upon what's going on at the unit we are in a circle and it involve which involves about what we're going to what kind of patients that we're going to see the clinical experience and then post clinical kind of wrap up where we talked about what we did that day we discuss any problems are any concerns or something interesting that we saw because remember there are multiple students that are going to Google and each of them may have different patients with different experiences said I'd like to ask nursing students can you tell the people who are in tendons a little bit about your clinical experience previous matches the stuff we doing school icon it's not really complicated you have to like stay focused because I don't know that you get starting my microphone is not working properly oh yes. experiences actually fun is not like very stressful you get used to it the first week will be like on a little complicated to you because you get to like you never knew was never exposed to this kind of stuff so I'll be your first hot like all this week but I should go on the face would be very friendly and then actually help you do the stuff that you don't know and you will also be dr. Becker's will be helping you if you don't know what to do John in clinical what what are some things some experiences that you've had during your clinical time Junior FIRST don't like washing the patient in the morning you take the blood pressures and then if some places have like diabetes will be administered insulin you're so gay. And also watch the doctors change the wound dressings yes there's a lot of stuff that you can be exposed to how about feeding tube yes I actually I had one patient that had feeding tube and then every morning I'll have to administer the medication to that what was that like tell them are you confident and tell us about your experience so actually I was very confident because I don't match my junior year so I'll bring you what to do and also before we got there we wasn't the chapter so I read the unread what to do to Stefan and I was very prepared how we run it like the post conference why you don't why we all get together and how we share our our experiences we just get because something some people may experience different things in other so it's not fair for it's not for you so you have to like tell the other than if they're interesting the next two people can switch have this relations what about your experience giving out medication what do you mean what what were you nervous or or to juice how did maybe pharmacology help you or how did your own review you know your own self study help you know what was that experience like you know cuz you know you can kill people by giving them the wrong medication is the very stressful week because you have to be accustomed to like the routine where to give the medication in town and correct medication into the right patient so that Union you like supposed to work you really want to do everything correct and not get any mistake because as that back to say kill somebody so it was very hot the first week but as I got used to it and now I'm very confident what what what what was it when you get used to it because I put myself at risk patient because I don't want anybody to give me the wrong medication affect my health so when you do that you really you will do your best and also you have to go to your medication you have to show your medication your signs and symptoms and what to monitor can you show me a list of medications the class. At the beginning of the semester beginning of the semester that you would have to look up the article geology the signs and symptoms nursing interventions if you don't know these medications you will not be able to give out medication nursing home so let me put those people those people in the audience that are not familiar with how this worked on in the beginning this dude I gave them a list of every man patient that was being used by the 40 residents that were in the nursing home and it was a list of over a hundred medications that it was close to about a hundred and fifty medications and the students got this list they had to go home and look up all the medications and they had to be prepared because they didn't know which patient they were going to get and they needed to know those men station so in order for them to be successful they need to look up the bed and be prepared to tell the patient what medications they were getting and be prepared to monitor the patient for any AD the fact that they were getting welcomes last I see you're joined us you can unmute yourself and say hello thank you for joining us where talk about clinical can you share with the people in attendance your experience and clinical and maybe your challenges your successes it's basically is not just about being with people when you go to clinical it's real you've been sitting all this time and it actually comes to fruition when you go to clinical and it was it was because but I heard from going to go from previous students was that it was a it was traumatizing for them cuz they weren't in the study for also being a medication if you don't have the the foresight to really look at the patient and know what's going on with them make a serious mistake and it's also a time for us to draw is this the future cuz if you can't deal with it can you tell them something that you remember thought something that you remember very baby cuz it was traumatic something that you learned in clinical that your you will remember maybe 5-10 years from now and what if his worthless CNAs and they told her and I was like okay that should be fine and I went up there and it looks like they had him and crew for 14 hours they had  matter all the way up to their back and understand it was like all this is normal for us but that's it I'm glad you stayed here a little bit about your study skills and why meet you successful so before LPN I wasn't where I was just I was study for an hour and then bring it when I got some stuff that'll be fine with that when I got to LPN I did the same thing and I didn't get the same results and I said hold on what's going on and then I realized that I just have to memorize definition I just have to memorize formulas and then I actually have to think further than that and also you have to have consistent study schedule it's not like you study for 7 hours the night before and expect to get every day throughout the semester if you want long-term success Foundation I'm thinking that you have to use thank you and I both mad and Celeste answer Quest scenario which is based upon something somebody that you probably seen the patient will call them mr. and and he's a 70 year old African American man and he admitted to the hospital for the treatment of significant edema which is associated with heart failure and the provider it could be either a physician or a nurse practitioner has ordered furosemide Lasix IV at 1 mg per kilogram every 6 hours so my question to both Celeste and how mad is can you tell me a little bit about your awesome I'd and Lacey so you know that if you don't want to do The Physician prescribes a diuretic and helping the body get rid of fluid in your first symptoms of hypo T-Mobile's and you have to monitor its manifestation and you'll have to make sure the dosing is correct so if you're doing by body weight you have to make sure the calculations so the knowing medical math is very important and it has basic algebra I Med what would you like to add to that so I'm giving diabetics is very important that you monitor for electrolytes and potassium because these two key switch at any given moment so it's very important. And also the side effects hyperkalemia and hypokalemia great thank you thank you and whatnot how would you monitor the hypo potassium at what wind say monitor what what exactly do you mean by monitor of hyper or hypo so you can see that with on propositions of Concord. volume six ok what number are you looking for 20.55 + you would do with that patient who has edema either one of you at work do you want to make sure the person in that range you would do daily Wayne so you want to see the fishing games more than 2 pounds in one day you know what's up it's a Genie in a fluid that's too much and then you would also do your heart rate Paul's and you just look at the person looks physically and see if they have swelling in the extremities their hands just was there imagine anything you'd like to add basically surgical but before you actually give the direct the medication you have to like monitor the patient's weight that's very important absolutely is it on any questions from people that are listening anybody yes go Celeste and go Hamed thank you any anybody questions that even the faculty that are in attendance is there anything you would like to ask because I wanted to know about students alright then let me just ask one more thing regarding questions because I when I talk questions I'm talking questions NCLEX questions because let's face it you know you can go through this program but if you don't pass the licensing exam you cannot practice as a nurse so can I Celeste or how mad can you talk about how your approach to questions has changed maybe from before you came in to pee in and now that you're from graduating PN like before we got you basically gave whatever answer you get what you want because we would be following you so like the yes or no questions but as you go to the program you have to know why the interest correct a wise not correct and give a rationale for it for me it's like a my oh my NCLEX book even more nervous about actually going out and breaking because it's not you I'm done with people and this is a planned all this month that I've gotten throughout the two years to an actual person a couple questions that you go home and tell us the right stuff so classmates because we usually bring up the things that I think people don't realize that nursing really is a team effort and students work collaboratively because there are skills that some students have and others don't and they work together to get the chance to run where do we go for clinical the answer is Kings County Hospital which is a level 1 trauma center and Susan McKinney which is a long-term care setting a question which I'm going to ask my students to answer what characteristics do you think you need or to be successful as a nurse I wanted recently grit you have to persevere over a long. Of time to catch us come in with a whole bunch of energy in the beginning it's and it's a marathon not a Sprint okay you have to you have to be persistent in your so a lot of people what happens is women with a lot of energy and by the time January comes around they burn out and they drop off the program and a lot of time you're going to want to give up but it's the people who consistently say I'm going to keep on doing the same thing but nursing is going to be very hard especially when you're fresh graduate and you know nothing wooden tables you to persevere what you want but I can't get the gold member what it what characteristics do you think you need to be successful in nursing jephte Billy B you have to really have a strong mind because she likes easily distracted by something come here when you cuz you know how far you've come and you know the benefit that you can get at the end so I suggest that you go with the monster love that you can actually do the work and ask help you need help do not be ashamed of asking for her I'm sorry you were breaking up a little bit the comment that you made about finishing kind of leads into the next questions what happens after you have can you tell either one of you tell the audience then what's next Trisha p n tell a little bit about going on to be an RN so it depends on the person I mean I know some people they want to go to Medical route which is being a doctor was completely different by the way they want to go to I know some people that want to go into there are Another Empty but you have to figure out what your specific passages with nursing home care in the car. There's so many different branches of Nursing are you like a cigarette out if you survive remind me to go part-time and I'm going to assess their problem you want to add something you have like a lot of choices like there's a lot of different things that you can do with your license you just have to like on celeste's choose your passion and thank you is that I'm very proud of is that saved either by doing a bridge program where there's a bridge from LPN to RN or a bachelor's degree near then you can decide where we are going to go as far as future education it could be a master's-level program program most of the nursing programs especially for nurse practitioners are terminating in a doctoral degree and it's usually a doctorate in nursing practice so your your choice of school will depend upon your grave will depend upon whether you want to stay close to home or whether you would like to move on move away my finances where you get a scholarship I I'm always promoting cute and Sunni because of the cost but that is something you want to think about what or maybe it's another state maybe you'd like to pick up your roots in New York and go somewhere else by that suggests that stays the station that you're going to have to make what are a couple of questions I know that a BMCC I know that look Guardia Community College has a switch program programs are you usually associate level the great thing that I will say about these programs once you get your RN license not the p.m. license but the RN license can you also have online options that you're going to be open to so if you want Celeste had said she wants to work and she wants to go to school maybe an online option might be something that might be of interest questionnaire both Hamid and Celeste what's Specialty's you think you might want to go into the sign of the Trini is very hard for me I'm not sure you know all of you and this comes from my own personal experience sometimes you take what's available because you want to get a job and the job that you want Bae not always be there so either you just want to get in there and navigate which of these within a facility of my my recommendation would probably be find a big a big like a New York Mount Sinai because there's going to be lot of flexibility within that that overall facility to be able to change from one baby one type of person to another may be going from medical-surgical to the app waiting room or going from peas to Eternal health or they're there might be opportunities for you and you want to even start now thinking about your pain and putting away your money cuz you want to get vested in a system where you can walk away in 25 years and and have a pension and one of the great things students that graduate from Clara Barton are you now 18 years old 20-25 years they're only going to be 40 43 44 and they've got a whole lifetime of great opportunities ahead of them which I Nick is so great specially from where I'm standing or sitting in this case because I chose nursing as a third or maybe it was the fourth career so any other questions before we wrap up any thoughts this Isaacs is there anything you'd like to ask sorry to put you on the spot that's okay I just want to say good job.
