“What I enjoyed most about the pharmacy technician program at Clara Barton High School was that it gave students the opportunity to explore a career that is underappreciated but essential for the aging population. In addition to this, students could use knowledge from other classes that were beneficial before joining the program, such as chemistry and algebra. From learning how to count pills by five to make verification for the pharmacist easier, to mixing solutions and emulsions, and memorizing the top 200 drugs, both the didactic and hands-on portions of Barton PhT were anything but boring!
The program prepared me for employment by providing skills useful in both retail and hospital settings, making the job application process more flexible once I was approved to take the PTCB exam. I was able to work while earning that credential in college to take pre-pharmacy courses.
My most memorable moment of the program was when all of the students participated in a compounding lab with our professor, Dr. Edmond, to create both a solution and a suspension. Every pharmaceutical compound we made as practice was also useful for practical nursing students.”
